Lessons and reading
HelloChinese teaches vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, and speaking in a planned sequence. Its pronunciation and handwriting exercises are useful when you are learning how Chinese sounds and how characters are written.
Dengdeng does not provide that introductory course. It gives you connected texts to read with pinyin, definitions, and translations available when needed.
You can use both. Keep the course for material you are still learning, and add reading practice before you finish it. Our reading guide after Duolingo describes an approach that also works alongside HelloChinese.
Stories
HelloChinese includes graded stories alongside its lessons. Try those if you want reading material within the same app as your course.
Dengdeng selects real stories from China, including cultural trends, technology, and everyday life. Each comes in three difficulty versions. If a version is too difficult, you can switch to an easier one on the same subject.
Read a sample from each app. Check whether you can explain the main event before revealing the translation.
Review
In Dengdeng, the words you tap while reading enter a review queue. Common words get priority when new vocabulary enters practice. Exercises include flashcards, fill-in-the-blank sentences, and sentence building. You can also add an HSK 3.0 deck to the same queue.
HelloChinese includes spaced repetition as part of its course. If you already review vocabulary there, try Dengdeng's review format before deciding whether you want to use both systems. The method page explains how Dengdeng selects and schedules words.
Access
Dengdeng is available on iOS and Android. One complete story from each daily edition is free, and five stories from the archive open up each week. Pro includes the full edition, archive, and additional reader and practice tools. The website shows short previews.
Both apps are available on iOS and Android. HelloChinese is the option of these two for learners who need a beginner course.

Common questions
Should I replace HelloChinese with Dengdeng?
Only if you no longer need the course. You can keep using HelloChinese for pronunciation and grammar while adding Dengdeng for reading.
Is Dengdeng suitable for absolute beginners?
Not from zero. Dengdeng does not teach pinyin, tones, or first sentence patterns. Once you know some basic words, Easy stories and the HSK 3.0 word decks are a place to start, and our beginner roadmap covers the steps before that.
When should I start reading?
Try a short supported text when you can read simple lesson sentences. You do not need to finish the course first. Use our reading check if you are unsure where to start.
