Content and difficulty
Dengdeng’s daily selection focuses on real stories from China, including cultural trends, technology, and everyday life. You can read the latest edition or, with Pro, browse earlier editions in the archive.
Each story has an Easy, Medium, and Hard version. You can switch to simpler Chinese without changing the topic.
The Chairman's Bao has a large catalogue of news-based lessons organized by level. It provides more material to browse within a lesson format.
In either app, read a sample before choosing a difficulty. You should be able to follow the main event without translating every sentence. Prior knowledge of the subject can make a text easier to understand.
Exercises and review
The Chairman's Bao includes reading and listening comprehension exercises. These are useful if you want to check your understanding of a particular article.
Dengdeng does not include article-comprehension quizzes. Its practice focuses on vocabulary collected during reading. Common words get priority when new vocabulary enters practice, and each exercise shows the word in a sentence.
Both apps offer vocabulary review. Try a few exercises as well as a sample article before choosing. Dengdeng's method page explains how its review queue and schedule work.
Access
One complete story from each daily Dengdeng edition is free in the app on iOS and Android, and five stories from the archive open up each week. Pro includes all three stories, the archive, and additional reader and practice tools.
Dengdeng's website shows two complete sentences and a short, faded fragment of the third. The full stories are in the app. Choose The Chairman's Bao if you need to read full articles on a computer.
